Class Survey

1- What was your favorite part or software program of this class?
I really liked this last project, because I have never used Adobe Premiere before, actually I don't think I ever edited a video before, so was nice to learn a new software and I'm impressed with all the possibilities that it offers.

2- What was your least favorite part or software program of this class?
I liked all of them, I didn't have problems with the softwares because all Adobe programs follow the same standards in their interface. Probably I won't use Adobe Media Encoder that much, but only because of my field of work and study and not because it isn't a good software.

3- What part or program of this class will you continue to use in your artwork?
Most of them, photoshop, illustrator that are fundamental tools for graphic design, and premiere for school or just to have fun.

4- What was your favorite piece of artwork you made in this class?
I don't want to brag about myself, but actually I liked all of them, maybe I was really inspired this semester (haha), but I like this kind of classes that makes me improve my skills and it's free to have my own choices of themes to my pieces. Since I was taking only lectures classes for a year, probably my creativity was "stored" for all this time.

5- What was your favorite piece of artwork made by someone else in the class?
I think that everyone accomplished very well the assignments that were proposed. My favorite piece is the animation project from Dalton Radcliffe, because it's obvious, was amazing, really well done, well shooted. I liked it a lot.

6- If you could change a part of the project assignments or part of this class what would it be?
I really liked this class, how I improved my skills and how I learned new things. I like your way of teaching and you are very comprehensive about pushing us further than our "comfort zone" but also being able to accept our limits - and I notice it not only with me but with my classmates too. The only thing that I think would be nice is that for one project assignment you give a theme, something to follow (Example: a movement art, a concept, a poetry, etc). As I said before, I like the freedom of choosing themes for my art pieces, it's more comfortable, easy… but I think that at least one of the projects could have a theme, because with this people learn how to make work under "pressure" or following a requirement, and also make people learn about the subject of the theme, they'll have to search and learn about it before doing the project… it will be a free project, but with a focus on something.

On November 7 I went to the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach. They had an exhibition in celebration of its 50th anniversary called GOLD - which is pretty intuitive since a 50th anniversary is named as "Golden Jubilee". They displayed artworks from different contemporary artists, some artists used gold for their art piece and some of them used the concept of gold - to reinforce morals, values, beauty, etc.

Compared to other museums that I went this one is small, it took me no more than 1 hour to walk through the museum reading each artist statement and contemplating the art pieces.  Was a really good experience, I always have the feeling that I'm get more intelligent and inspired only by the fact of visiting a museum. The staff was friendly and a security guard even explained me the concept of one of the art pieces probably after realizing that I spent too much time looking at the painting.

I posted some pictures of my favorite art pieces. The first piece is from Ebony G. Patterson, it is a tapestry made with flowers and toy guns representing photos of Jamaicans who died at work in violent circumstances. What I admire about this piece is that the idea of the tapestry is to implicate the views as a witness - in my point of view, it brings another meaning to the work, we become more sensible and even guilt about the Jamaicans situation.

I've always asked myself why gold was so valuable, and Alicja Kwade, made a sculpture like golden bars out this concept: why gold is highly valued. The bars are not gold, they are commercial coal briquettes made in Germany. She gave "life" to this intriguing question - gold and coal are naturally-occurring and finite, so, why one is fancy and glamorous, and the other is used to produce energy? It make us rethink our concept of what is valuable and why.

A small room of the museum is called Art History Lab, with art works from different eras in the history of art. In this room they created the possibility for us viewers to travel between techniques, art movement, ages, countries and religions. I really liked it, and I could see a piece of work from Toulouse Lautrec, whom is important to the graphic design and printmaking history.

Premiere Tutorial

I chose this tutorial because I'll have to import a music to my video, so I'll need to edit the original audio, and this tutorial shows how to use the audio mixer tool, how to make the audio louder or soft and how to fade it. A trick he shows is to adjust the audio to play in only one of the sides of the speaker, it can give a nice effect to the video.

Art Video

I chose this video because was filmed in 1973 and I really like the effects, so, probably, was a huge innovation for that time. And nowadays we are used to science fiction movies and its effects, that sometimes, it's not even impressive anymore.

I loved this video, it's a simple idea, but it was beautifully done and I like the parallel between the two different realities.

The first review is “BEGIN WHERE YOU ARE” at Icebox Project Space, written by Annette Monnier:

and the second review is XAVIER LE ROY, ‘RETROSPECTIVE’ at MOMA PS1, written by Natalie Musteata:

I found both reviews on the artnews.com website.  I preferred the first review, because the author is more personal when writing about the exhibition. He said how he reacted to the art and also he encompasses the reaction of others ("which left us pondering our significance in the universe"). In my point of view is more interesting to read about someone else reaction and that makes me want to visit the gallery or research about the artist. In my work I always like to put personal experiences and thoughts, so I think it's nice from the person who write the reviews to give a feedback about how they felt. The second one the author is more focused on explaining how the performers behave and is more "technical" because tries to explain how the exhibition works and not what to expect from it.

Gallery Visit

I'm planning to go to Phoenix Downtown on the First Friday of October. I already went there once and I really liked it because it's not only one specific kind of art, have painting, sculpture, music etc... but since I was with a friend I didn't have a chance to walk all the merchants streets and galleries. This event is a good way to know what it's happening among the street art and to get inspired, so I totally recommend.

Animation

The Scream - Sebastian Cosor - Safe-Frame.com from Sebastian Cosor on Vimeo.

I really like this animation, it's simple, and for me is very deep too. I love Pink Floyd and even don't having "lyrics" this song, The great gig in the sky, is one of my favorite. Was a perfect combination between the song and the very known painting, The Scream of Nature by Edvard Munch, because always when I see a painting I try to understand the history behind it, and in my perception suited well.
I like the song and also the animation. It's simple because the characters don't move, so the animation is, basically, the change between scenarios and drawings, and sometimes they made use of the same drawing and effects.

FONTS

I chose the font Little Days Alt designed by West Wind Fonts. Nowadays, because of technology, cursive writing is being abolished from many schools curriculum and this really worries me. I really like cursive writing/handwriting because it show our difference and personality, and standardize the writing will annul a way of self expression. Through years, since caveman until the era of technology, our history was written by hands, and that's is the difference, we are not machines, I value it.

Picture
I chose the font Sketch Gothic School not for readability, but the aesthetics (this is a modern one, so it's easier to read). I like the dark era in the art history, and how everything, life style, fashion, architecture, paints, sculptures and even fonts followed a pattern and sent the same message. Old book always have this kind of fonts, or at least the first letter of the chapter. I just think that it's fancy, I like it.
